A Britton - 2011 - The Relationship between Social/Role Activities and Adherence to Medications, Exercise, and Diet in Patients with Congestive Heart Failure Conference Sponsor: Midwest Nursing Research Society Conference Year: 2002 Author: Britton, Agnes PI Institution Name: ... Congestive heart failure (CHF) is prevalent and costly. Patients with CHF are expected to adhere to treatment regimens that include medications, exercise, and diet to minimize symptom exacerbation and promote disease management. Although previous research has indicated that participation in social support groups may enhance adherence to treatment regimens, the effects of engaging in other social/role activities are not as well delineated. Additionally, individuals with CHF often choose not to participate in social support groups. Therefore, one aim of this study is to identify the relationships between social/role activities and adherence to medications, exercise, and diet. These relationships will be explored using baseline data from a longitudinal study of patients with CHF receiving home care. The study is based on Orem's self-care deficit theory. In addition to obtaining demographic data, an instrument was used to assess patients' perception of social/role activities and adherence to medications, exercise, and diet. Currently, there are 86 patients enrolled in the study with an overall goal of 100 subjects. Projected analyses of results, to be completed in December 2001, will include descriptive statistics and Pearson r correlation coefficients.
