Knowledge of normal cardiovascular development and physiology during fetal and postnatal life is necessary to fully understand the changes that occur in congenital heart disease, and in other abnormal cardiovascular states. This chapter first reviews normal cardiac embryology and development in the fetus and early postnatal life. Then, structural cardiac abnormalities that result in congenital heart disease are traced from their abnormal development during fetal life. Next, normal cardiovascular physiology is discussed, emphasizing the developmental aspects and changes from fetus, to neonate, infant, child, and adult. Then, pathophysiology of the cardiovascular system in congenital and acquired heart disease in the pediatric patient is reviewed. Finally, the relatively new field of myocardial preconditioning is highlighted. More Details:Developmental Physiology of the Cardiovascular System |
