Background: Sudafed PE (Mc Neil-PPC, Fort Washington, Pennsylvania) contains phenylephrine, whose predominant mechanism is to directly stimulate α-adrenergic receptors, leading to vasoconstriction. This medication can potentiate arrhythmia, hypertension, and myocardial infarction. It is becoming increasingly recognized that medications that act on the sympathetic nervous system can cause stress cardiomyopathy.
