This presentation will describe results of a study into the incidence of prehospital, post immersion cardiac arrest in Queensland. The study presents the findings of the analysis of the 117 cases of prehospital, post-immersion cardiac arrest attended to by the Queensland Ambulance Service between 2000 and 2003. Data was sourced from the Cardiac Outcomes Project, which is managed by the Australian Centre for Prehospital Research on behalf of the Queensland Ambulance Service. This data is collected from ambulance report forms before being entered onto the cardiac arrest database. The Cardiac Outcomes Project then audits the data to ensure correct and complete entry of the data. The study also reports on the differences in victim characteristics and outcome that exist between metropolitan and regional areas. Finally, trends in prehospital drowning cardiac arrests will be identified. The data shows a substantial increase in the number of drowning deaths in 2002. This study seeks to identify any factors that could explain this increase.
