Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is a leading cardiovascular cause of death. Some patients are at higher risk for SCA due to one of a number of inherited cardiac syndromes. Patients with depression or anxiety are also at higher risk for SCA. Moreover, a number of psychiatric medications increase the risk for SCA. Psychiatric illnesses may influence a patient's capacity to consent to treatment and prevention of SCA. The mainstay for prevention of SCA is the implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD). However, these devices carry an increased risk for psychiatric co morbidity. These, in turn, modulate the patient's risk of cardiovascular complications.
